How to get to San Blas Islands from Panama City

2026 Guide — Trip on Boats

San Blas Panama is one of the most incredible destinations in the Caribbean, and getting there is part of the adventure. The San Blas Islands form an archipelago protected by the Guna Yala Comarca — an autonomous indigenous territory of more than 360 islands where time seems to stand still.

Access isn’t immediate, but with the right information, the transfer is straightforward and worth every minute. Depending on the type of experience you choose — day trip, shared or private boat, or cabin stay — transportation will combine a 4×4 vehicle + speedboat, or a private flight to arrive directly in under an hour.

This guide explains all the options, costs, and schedules so you can plan your trip to San Blas without any surprises.

How Long Does It Take to Get to San Blas from Panama City?

Transport option Approximate duration
🚙 4×4 + speedboat 4 to 5 hours
✈️ Private or shared flight 40 to 50 minutes

Option 1 — 4×4 + Speedboat: The Classic Route

The vast majority of visitors reach the San Blas Islands Panama by this route. It’s the most affordable and, for many, part of the charm of the trip.

How does it work?

The transfer begins very early in Panama City. A 4×4 vehicle picks you up at your accommodation and crosses the jungle to reach the Guna Yala port — a mountain journey with breathtaking views that takes approximately 3 hours from the hotel to the Guna Yala comarca. From the dock, a speedboat takes you to the islands or your selected vessel.

Typical schedule:

Time Stage
5:00 – 5:30 am Pick-up at your hotel in Panama City
8:30 – 9:00 am Arrival at the Guna Yala port
9:00 – 9:30 am Speedboat departure toward the San Blas Islands
10:00 – 11:00 am Arrival at the selected island or vessel

Estimated costs:

Service Price from Details
Shared transport — car + speedboat $150 USD / person Round trip included
Private car $220 USD / vehicle One way, max. 6 passengers
Private speedboat $400 USD / boat One way, up to 18 passengers

Transport costs are always quoted separately from the vessel price. We take care of coordinating everything according to your needs.

Upon arrival at the Guna Yala comarca, the entry fee is paid in cash ($22 for foreigners — $7 for Panamanians and residents; passport or ID required).

Option 2 — Private or Shared Flight: The Fast Route

For those who want an aerial adventure or simply prefer to arrive sooner, there is the option of flying directly to authorized airstrips within the Guna Yala Comarca.

How does it work?

Flights depart from Albrook Airport (Marcos A. Gelabert) in Panama City and land on community airstrips within the archipelago. The journey takes between 40 and 50 minutes, with aerial views of the Caribbean that are part of the spectacle.

Estimated costs (vary depending on the aircraft and number of passengers):

Flight type Price from Details
Shared flight $200 USD / person One way
Private flight $450 USD / person One way

Important before booking a flight:

  • The airstrips are located within Guna communities — they are not commercial airports.
  • Luggage has mandatory restrictions: maximum 12–15 kg per passenger.
  • Upon arrival you must pay in cash the airstrip use fee + Guna Yala Comarca entry fee.
  • Flights may be cancelled or rescheduled due to weather conditions.

Return Schedules to Panama City

This is key information that many people don’t check before traveling. There are two daily departures from the Guna Yala port:

Departure from vessel or island Approx. arrival in Panama City
7:00 am 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
3:00 pm 7:00 – 8:00 pm
