How to Visit the San Blas Islands?

San Blas FAQ – Everything You Need to Know Before Your Trip

Planning & Logistics

💵 Transportation Conditions
Transportation is not included in the nightly rate and is added to the total cost of your experience.

📌 Service Confirmation
To confirm transportation, a 20% deposit is required in advance.

💰 Remaining Balance
The remaining balance is due at pickup from your hotel or before boarding the small plane, depending on the transfer option you choose.

🚐 Ways to Reach Your Experience
We offer two ways to get to your selected vessel or island cabin: by land + speedboat, or by small plane.

🚙 4x4 Transport + Speedboat
An authorized 4x4 vehicle picks you up directly at your hotel or agreed meeting point in Panama City starting at 5:00 AM. Along the way, there's a brief stop at a gas station to use the restroom or grab snacks.

⏱️ Travel Time
The drive takes approximately 3 hours, depending on traffic. You'll arrive at the port around 9:00 AM. From there, a speedboat transfers you to your selected vessel or island cabin, with an estimated arrival between 10:00 and 11:00 AM.

✈️ Small Plane
You can also fly from Albrook Airport in Panama City to the local airstrip in San Blas. The flight takes approximately 45 minutes.

🕘 Flight Schedule
Departure times vary by date, but flights are generally scheduled between 7:30 AM and 10:00 AM.

🏝️ Arrival by Plane & Final Transfer
Upon arrival, your vessel will be waiting for you directly, or a speedboat will pick you up and take you to your selected island cabin.

🤝 Full Coordination
We handle all transfers so your arrival is smooth, comfortable, and stress-free — regardless of the accommodation option you choose.

🎒 Recommended Luggage
Keep it practical and light. Whether on a vessel or an island cabin, storage space is limited and a simple, functional setup works best.
🧳 Rolling suitcases are not recommended — a backpack and small carry-on bag are ideal.

🌴 What to Bring
Swimsuit, light beach clothing, quick-dry towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, comfortable sandals, personal hygiene items, chargers, personal medications, and something light to read.

🌊 Additional Tips
A camera or waterproof case for your devices is also useful, along with insect repellent (preferably organic). If you're prone to motion sickness, bring medication such as Dramamine.

🚤 If your transfer includes a speedboat, pack your belongings in plastic bags (like garbage bags) to protect them from sea spray. Depending on weather conditions, both you and your luggage may arrive wet.

🪪 Documentation
Don't forget your passport or national ID. It is required to enter the Guna Yala comarca, and authorities may ask for identification to verify your last entry into the country.

Check-in by Land
The journey begins around 5:00 AM from Panama City. You'll arrive at the port around 9:00 AM, and from there a speedboat transfers you to your selected vessel or island cabin, with an estimated arrival between 10:00 and 11:00 AM. This is the official check-in time for your experience.

🌅 Regular Check-out
The speedboat picks you up between 6:45 AM and 7:30 AM. A vehicle will be waiting at the port to take you back to Panama City, with an estimated arrival around midday.

🕒 Late Check-out
If you book a late departure, the speedboat picks you up at 3:00 PM, with an estimated arrival back in Panama City around 8:00 PM.

✈️ Flight Times
For transfers by small plane, schedules depend on your travel date and operational availability.

💵 Payments on the Islands
There are no ATMs or banking services on the San Blas islands, so it's important to bring enough cash before you travel.

🧾 Cash will be needed for any pending reservation balance, purchases on the islands, souvenirs, tips, and any additional expenses during your stay.

⚠️ The remaining reservation balance must be paid in cash upon arrival. If payment cannot be completed at that time, the booking may be cancelled according to the established conditions.

💳 Card & Bank Transfer Payments
If you prefer to pay the remaining balance by card or bank transfer, you must notify us in advance and complete the payment at least 5 days before your service date.

🌦️ Weather Conditions & Operations
Activities take place whenever conditions are safe. If the weather prevents departure or requires a change of plans, the best available alternative will be offered to prioritize your safety and comfort.

🌈 Caribbean weather is unpredictable and cannot be guaranteed. It's normal to experience sunshine, rain, and even rainbows all in the same day. For this reason, trips are not cancelled due to rain.

Operational Decisions
On vessel experiences, the captain has final authority to adjust the route, modify the itinerary, or if necessary, deny boarding — always based on the wellbeing of everyone on board.

🚫 Extraordinary Circumstances
If the Guna Yala authorities suspend transfers (road, speedboat, or plane) for safety reasons, the trip will be rescheduled to a new available date, agreed upon between the client and the service provider.

💰 Force Majeure Cancellations
In extreme situations where the vessel or cabin is unable to provide the service, the paid deposit will be refunded.

🛟 Safety & Environment
We work with experienced, fully licensed operators, know the area well, and always operate under appropriate conditions. Guna Yala is a peaceful, safe, and highly respected region within Panama.

📋 Experience Briefing
At the start of your experience, whether on a vessel or island cabin, you'll receive a brief introduction with general recommendations and basic guidelines, designed to ensure a safe, organized, and enjoyable stay.

Vessel Operations
On vessels, each sailboat or catamaran has a captain who has the authority to make decisions related to safety, navigation, and the operation of the boat. Their instructions must be followed at all times.

🛖 Island Cabin Experience
In island cabins, the experience is managed by local Guna hosts, who welcome and accompany you throughout your stay, providing warm and authentic hospitality within their own environment.

🍽️ Our Food Philosophy
The food offering is fresh, tropical, and generous. It typically includes catch-of-the-day fish and seafood, rice, pasta, fruits, salads, and Caribbean flavors prepared with local ingredients.

On Vessels
Meals are prepared on board by the crew, adapting to the style and dynamic of each boat.

🛖 In Island Cabins

📌 Food and beverages included are managed by those running the experience (crew on vessels or hosts in cabins), so it is essential to inform us of any requirements before the trip.

🛏️ Accommodation on Board
On vessels, cabins are comfortable but compact, stateroom-style. They may feature a double bed or twin beds, fans or air conditioning depending on the vessel selected, and a basic space for luggage.

🛖 In Island Cabins
The space is more spacious and private, with an experience more connected to land, always maintaining a simple, natural style in keeping with the surroundings.

🚿 Bathrooms & Water
Bathrooms may be private or shared, depending on the vessel or cabin selected. Fresh water is limited, so typically one quick shower per day is allowed.

🌙 Rest Experience
Sleeping on a vessel offers a unique experience, with the gentle movement of the sea and the sound of the water. In cabins, rest is more tied to the island environment, with the sea just steps away and a greater sense of connection with nature.

🤿 Activities & Equipment
Most vessels and cabins come with snorkel gear, kayaks, paddle boards, floats, and other basic equipment to enjoy the sea.

🏝️ On Board
Every day we visit different islands. While sailing, you can fish from the vessel, and at each stop the captain recommends activities based on the surroundings: snorkeling in coral reefs, beach volleyball, island walks, or rowing in calm waters.

🛖 On the Island
If you stay on an island, the experience includes tours that take you to visit nearby islands, untouched beaches, and natural pools.

🔋 Electricity
Electricity may be generated through solar panels, wind energy, or generators, both on vessels and in some cabins. Moderate use is recommended and bringing a power bank is advised. Hair dryers and other high-energy devices are not recommended.

📶 Connectivity
Mobile signal is limited and depends on your carrier. The companies that typically work in the area are Más Móvil and Tigo.

⛵ On vessels, some are equipped with Starlink satellite internet, though this is not a guaranteed service.

🛖 In cabins, mobile signal tends to be even more limited. However, Starlink service is currently available during the day.

📌 If you need a stable connection during your trip, it is important to let us know before making your reservation.

🍹 Personal Drinks & Snacks
Yes. You are welcome to bring snacks, wine, beer, or other drinks for your personal consumption during the experience.

⛵ Some vessels already include a bar service, so it is worth checking the specific conditions for your selected option.

🛖 In cabins, this will depend on the accommodation chosen, so it is recommended to verify in advance what is included in your booking. All cabins have a bar where you can purchase a variety of drinks and cocktails.
